Each exterior hive part that may be exposed to rain or snow has been meticulously constructed using Fir wood and coated with 100% natural beeswax to help withstand the elements. The decision to use Fir wood instead of the traditional Pine was a thoughtful one, as Fir wood has a tighter grain-flow, making the exterior parts far more durable and less susceptible to shrinking, expanding, warping, or twisting from the rain compared to Pine.
After the wood is cut, each part is dipped into a pool of natural beeswax, allowing the beeswax to be thoroughly absorbed. This not only protects the wood but also gives the hives their distinctive natural golden honey-like lustre.
The Inner Cover comes pre-assembled and features a multipurpose oval opening in the middle. This oval opening can serve as an entrance for bees to access a personal hive feeder method or as a one-way exit for Oval Bee Escapes, which are used to remove bees from honey supers before harvesting.
The Beeswax Coated Inner Cover, measuring 16-1/4" x 19-7/8" x 3/4", is made of Fir wood, ensuring that the exterior parts are more durable and resistant to the effects of rain, such as shrinking, expanding, warping, or twisting, compared to Pine. This pre-assembled Inner Cover is designed to fit all 8-frame Langstroth hives.
